Berliner Festspiele Polaroids

One institution, two houses and a hundred formats. Throughout the year, the Berliner Festspiele put on a wealth of imaginative and intelligent festivals, excellent exhibition projects and individual events in the Haus der Berliner Festspiele in Berlin-Wilmersdorf and the Martin-Gropuis-Bau within walking distance of Potsdamer Platz. At the core of our activities is work by contemporary and international artists, whom we showcase in festivals such as MaerzMusik – Festival of Contemporary Music, Theatertreffen, Foreign Affairs – International Festival for Theatre and Performing Arts, Musikfest Berlin and Jazzfest Berlin, as well as at large exhibitions in the Martin-Gropius-Bau. Our two houses are in constant transformation all year round: becoming the campus for youth and educational programmes, the shop window for national contests for young people and the stage for hosting both the Berlinale and the authors from around the world during the International Literature Festival.

The overarching hallmark of our work is our commitment to large formats, architectural interventions and keeping artistic activity relevant to society. Our houses are nonchalant havens in the heart of the city. The Festspiele offers a programme of events 365 days a year. It establishes a framework in which the variety contemporary productions focus on pioneering trends, ideas and concepts.

The Festspiele sees itself as a part of a worldwide network of working artists and host institutions that contribute to taking a fresh look at that which our society deems self-evident and expanding our horizon of consciousness through the promotion of creativity and political engagement. Art is our work and at the same a way of life – one which we hugely respect and are thankful for.
