About Tanztreffen der Jugend

Tanztreffen der Jugend

20 – 27 September 2019

The Tanztreffen der Jugend seeks to stay abreast of current developments and diverse efforts to establish dance as an art form in cultural education in its own right; it also serves to locate amateur youth dance in an artistic context. In a similar way to the Theatertreffen der Jugend, it will be a showcase and instigator for work with young adults, involving school ensembles and independent groups as well as ensembles that are already institutionally linked to ensembles. The exchange between participating youths and art education teachers / choreographers is at the heart of the festival.

The contest

This national contest is aimed at youth ensembles. School classes, clubs in schools, independent groups or groups affiliated to independent or professional dance and theatre groups may apply. There are no thematic or formal restrictions. A full-length rehearsal run-through of the production has to be handed in with the application form. The contest is annually announced in October, deadline for applications is in March.

The selection

A jury will choose the award-winners. Initially, they make a pre-selection on the strength of the application material and, after interviews and discussions with these ensembles, the final award-winners will be chosen. The prize is an invitation to the Tanztreffen der Jugend in Berlin. Alongside artistic and formal criteria, a decisive factor in the selection procedure is that the productions are created and developed in close dialogue with the choreographers / art education teachers and the youths involved; the content should be have a clear relevance for young adults, and the attitude and perspective of young people should be strong. The productions should be an example of works by and with youths.

The performances

On every day of the festival, one of the selected productions will perform in front of an audience at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele. Every ensemble will be allocated one day to set up and rehearse, and the entire technical support of the Berliner Festspiele. All performances will be recorded.

The Treffen

Aside from the public performances, the interaction of groups is equally, if not more, important. The Campus, which is especially conceived for this purpose, offers many opportunities for this in various workshops, performance talks and discussions. In addition, a blog will be set up to comment on the festival goings-on. Other national contests at the Berliner Festspiele will complement the programme with texts and music.

The Forum

The Forum of Tanztreffen der Jugend has an exchange programme aimed at dance teachers. It consists of impulse and intensive workshops as well as discursive formats for performance talks and/or thematic focal points. The main aim of the Forum is to provide opportunities for collegial exchange.
